Cycle Speedway is a unique branch of cycle sport which can be enjoyed by all members of your family, whether its via racing or spectating! The sport must be the biggest contender for the title of most intense cycling discipline. Races are short but exciting. 4 laps of an outdoor 70-90 meter outdoor shale-surfaced track may sound easy, but it's not all about who can go the fastest... If you have a clever head on you, or consider yourself to be pretty 'bulky' then you too stand a great chance of beating your opponents to the finish line. Riding the correct line on the track is vital and can change depending on position of other riders in the race and their plans of attack.

Physical contact is a major part of our sport, any unlike any other cycling discipline, using your upper-body strength to barge opponents out your way is sometimes the only way to win a race! And of course with this being acceptable and within the rules, that's what makes the sport so entertaining for your friends and club supporters in the spectating audience.

Cycle speedway bikes are as simple as a BMX or Track Bike.. if not, simpler! There are no gears and absolutely no brakes. Brackets and quick-release fittings can also expect to not be seen. If you are new to the sport, it is easy enough to convert and old mountain bike frame into a cycle speedway legal set up. Just rip all the brakes and other parts off so you are left with the frame, wheels, peddles and saddle. Handlebars can be bought from our leading UK suppliers 'Archie Wilkinson'. For the more professional cyclist, a brand new custom-built bike specifically for the sport can also be purchased from the mentioned website. A basic bike will be made out of steel but if you're wanting to move up in the sport after finding your feet, you may want to take a look at the aluminium set-ups. Whilst our sport may seem like a crazy and dangerous idea to you, we do have an element of safety to ensure you don't pick up any long-lasting damage. Helmets and full finger gloves are a must, whilst the rules also require you to wear a long sleeve top and full length trousers. Considering forceful contact can be expected, some riders also prefer to wear elbow and knee pads but this is down to personal preference.
